Despite losing the first set in their quarterfinal match, Mark and Mardy stayed tough and defeated Huss/Levinsky 4-6, 6-3, 10-4. The two had a cleaner day on service and were the better team in the champion's tiebreaker.

February 16th, 2010

In his first match back since injuring his calf in Sydney, Mark and 2010 partner Mardy Fish finished on the top end of a seesaw match against Brunstrom/Rojer, winning 6-7, 7-6, 13-11. The first set went down to the wire with the opponents taking it in a tense tiebreaker.  Each team had multiple break opportunities in the set but neither were able to capitalize on their chances.

The second set started similarly to the first, but after five games, Mark and Mardy earned the first break of serve of the match to go up 4-2. However, the lead would quickly evaporate, as Brunstrom/Rojer reeled off the next three games to put the match on their serve, leading 5-4. Though the opponents seemed to have the momentum, Mark/Mardy broke back to square up the set and would go on to even the match in another close tiebreaker.

If you thought the first two sets were a dead heat, the champion’s tiebreaker proved to be the ultimate nailbiter. The opponents seemed to have the slight edge, holding a mini-break and getting to 7-5. Mark/Mardy battled to get the mini-break back and moved ahead to 8-7. Brunstrom/Rojer won the next two points to set up match point – it would not be theirs to take, as Knowlzee and Fish showed their match toughness. The sudden death set continued to sway back and forth until Mark/Mardy earned the mini-break at 11-11 and closed out the first round match on the next point to take it 13-11.

The run in Shanghai is over, as Benneteau/Tsonga defeated Mark/Mahesh 7-6, 6-2 in the semifinals. After going down an early break, Mark/Mahesh were able to break back and take the first set into a tiebreaker, but were unable to solidify themselves, as the Frenchmen took it 7-2.

After that, Mark/Mahesh could not put enough pressure on either of their opponents serves. It was a tough task with Bennteau/Tsonga serving 74% of their first serves in.

October 11th, 2009

The Bryan Brothers were just too good today, as they defeated Mark and Andy 6-4, 6-2 to take the China Open title in Beijing. After coming back in their last two matches, Mark/Andy were unable to replicate their previous performances.

The first set saw both teams win 50% of the points, but the Bryans were able to convert the first break chance they saw in the third game of the match. In the previous game, Mark/Andy had three break points on Bob's serve but couldn't seal the deal and he and Mike ultimately held.

The second set looked even until 2-2, when the Bryans earned a deciding point on Andy's serve. They took full advantage of their break point opportunity and never looked back from there, winning the next three games to win the title.

Afterwards, the players briefly took part in some dancing with the Chinese cheerleaders. Next time, they'll probably want to leave the shaking and motioning to the professionals!

October 10th, 2009

After another slow start in Beijing, Mark and Andy fought back to survive a close match against Dlouhy/Kohlschreiber 4-6, 6-2, 10-7 to advance to the finals.

The first set saw the opponents break Mark/Andy on Mark's first service game; the rest of the set was even with holds which meant a one set to love lead for the Czech/German duo.

In the second set, Mark/Andy held and then broke for a quick 2-0 lead. After an up and down service game, Mark eventually held to get to a 3-0 lead and he and Andy controlled the remainder of the set.

The pesky champion's tiebreaker proved to be a roller coaster as they often seem to be. After earning an early mini-break to lead 3-1, Mark/Andy lost a bit of rhythm and went down 4-7. They managed to dig deep and won the next six points. At 7-7, the opponents double faulted to give Mark/Andy the mini-break, and then Mark hit a second serve ace to get him and Andy to two match points. There was no tension on Mark's next service point, as they closed it out in style to earn the victory.

In the finals, Mark/Andy will face either the Bryan Brothers or Frenchmen Benneteau/Chardy.

October 7th, 2009

Mark and Andy fought back to earn an impressive win over Acasuso/Gonzalez in the quarterfinals of the China Open in Beijing. Mark/Andy won 4-6, 7-5, 10-4.

After going down a set and a break, Mark/Andy broke back to get to 3-3 in the second set, only to be broken again. Acasuso/Gonzalez served for the match at 5-4, and then the tide turned.

The Argentine and Chilean were unable to close out the match, and Mark/Andy reeled off three straight games to win the second set. After going down 1-3 in the champions tiebreaker, Mark/Andy won nine out of the next ten points to take the match. The victory over Acasuso/Gonzalez avenges Mark's loss to the pairing at Roland Garros earlier this year.

Mark and Andy's semifinal opponents have not been determined yet.

Surviving was a key ingredient to Mark and Mahesh's win today in Cincinnati. After taking the court after 11pm Wednesday night, the two lost a close first set to Lopez/Verdasco 7-5. The second set was not much different from the first, but Mark/Mahesh managed to earn a late break and served out the set 6-4.

The champions tiebreaker was filled with drama that was not expected. The "M&Ms" earned an early mini break and continued to win points. They went up 9-2 and held six match points. Slowly but surely with every point, Lopez/Verdasco fought all the way back to 9-9. The squandering of that many match points would get to many teams, but Mark/Mahesh dug deep and finally won the set 12-10, thus surviving.

It was a great day on Mark and Mahesh's serves; the two won 80% of their service points and did not face a single break point. They also won 43% of their return points.

This was Mirnyi/Ram's third Masters Series final this year on American Hardcourts. They lost in the final of Indian Wells and took the crown in Miami.

The Canadian Masters Series event holds a special place in Mark's heart, as it was the first title he ever won on the pro circuit and he won it with good friend Jim Courier in 1993.

Today's semifinal match in Montreal was expected to go the distance and it did not disappoint. Mark/Mahesh earned their first win against Nestor/Zimonjic, winning the three encounter 5-7, 6-2, 10-4.

The first set was a nailbiter, as neither team refused to yield. At 5-5, Mark/Mahesh had their only break chance on a deciding point but did not capitalize. Conversely, Nestor/Zimonjic were able to earn a break on a deciding point the next game, which earned them the first set 7-5.

Set number two was a different story. After what would appear to be an easy hold for the Canadian/Serbian pairing, Mark/Mahesh leveled the game to deuce and managed to convert a deciding point to take a 1-0 lead. They did not look back, as they earned a second break and took the second set 6-2.

The champion tiebreakers are usually somewhat of a lottery, but Mark/Mahesh continued their strong form, maintaining the momentum they earned in the second set. They raced to leads of 4-0 and 6-1. They reached six match points at 9-3 and after Nestor/Zimonjic held for one more point, Mark put a perfect end to the match by hitting an ace!

The win puts Mark/Mahesh into their third final of the year (RUP at the Australian Open and Barcelona). This is their first Masters Series Final appearence since the 2008 Madrid Masters which was played indoors. They'll face either the #1 seeded Bryan Brothers or Mirnyi/Ram in the final.

August 14th, 2009

No problem at all for Mark/Mahesh today - the two won their quarterfinal match against Fyrstenberg/Matkowski in straight sets, taking the victory with a 6-3, 6-4 score. They had a solid serving day, winning 75% of their points on serve and were fairly successful on their opponents serves,  winning 38% of those points and converting 2/4 break point chances.

As with their previous match, Mark/Mahesh did well to protect their serve when in trouble; they saved all five break points they faced, making it 15 in a row saved at this tournament.

In the semifinals, they'll square off against Wimbledon Champions Nestor/Zimonjic. The last time these two teams met, Mark/Mahesh lost a really close match to the Canadian/Serbian pairing at the Rome Masters.
